Birrie has had a career in both film and theatre since finishing her degree in Theatre Design at the University of Pretoria. She has worked mainly as a costume designer for opera, ballet, musicals and drama for several Theatre companies and the Cape Town Opera. Early in her career she worked at the Space Theatre in Cape Town where she was involved in various fringe and protest theatre projects. She was affiliated with the Glass Theatre, an avantgarde company where she was responsible for costume. She designed costumes for film and television but now concentrates on production design for film. She is probably the best known production designer in South Africa and has numerous international credits and awards to her name.
Once again she was an obvious choice for director Olwagen to visually create the atmosphere of the turbulent young 1980’s and the contrasting middle aged suburban feel of 2002 in the film. The attention to detail – since the whole set is “hot” because of the 360° vision of the moving camera – represents a major achievement in production design.
